CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Henry
Age: Unknown, but he’s probably somewhere between 15 and 17.
Canon: Fire Emblem: Awakening
Canon Point: End of Chapter 25, shortly before entering battle with the Fell Dragon
Character Information: While disarmingly optimistic, he shows a gruesome lack of mercy while on the battlefield…
Personality: Henry is a little bit like a puppy. An excitable, eager, more-than-slightly demented puppy.
From a distance, and perhaps for the first minute or so of interaction, he just comes across as a childish but bubbly guy. He is always smiling and trying to lighten the mood; his preferred means of dealing with serious conversations is completely derailing them with bad puns and a fake smile.
In direct contrast to his upbeat attitude, Henry has some interests that make others extremely uncomfortable. He genuinely loves war and killing; he loves dismemberment, incineration, and other forms of physical torture. He loves inventing and casting curses that can lead to fates worse than death. Why? He just does. But possibly even worse than this is the fact that Henry loves sharing his enthusiasm with everyone else, whether they want to hear it or not. Mostly, the morbidity is just a joke to him, because he physically cannot feel pain and likes to see other people appalled and confused — but in addition, it was a very tried-and-true tactic to make sure people didn’t talk to him when he was younger, because quite frankly he didn’t want anyone to get too close.
Though he doesn’t like to talk about it, the issue of parental abandonment has a strong influence on his personality. …Come on, you knew it was coming.
Now, Henry has the ability to speak to all lifeforms, including animals and plants. When he was younger, he spent most of his time playing in the forest outside his village, because quite frankly, human society had nothing for him — his parents could sense his massive power and unstable disposition, and they hated him for it. The animals and plants of the forest didn’t seem to hate him, though; in fact, they quite liked him. One female wolf, in particular, took him in as a sort of adopted son. She is the person Henry refers to as his “mother”. They grew very close for several years, to the point where Henry would disappear for weeks or months at a time to go live with Wolfmom (his parents were just happy to have him ‘out with the beasts where he belongs’). One day while Henry was in the village, however, Wolfmom walked into town looking for him. Immediately, a number of terrified and angry villagers descended upon her, intent on killing the ‘monster’.
Henry got there too late, naturally. Wolfmom was dead.
Shortly afterward, he slaughtered every single member of that mob, using a blaze of magical power that he honestly didn’t even know he had.
From his life experiences, Henry came to a few conclusions. One of them was this: “Getting too close to anyone is a very bad idea, because something awful is going to happen and they’ll either A. Hate me or B. die.” Another one was this:“Animals are good creatures who deserve to live and have respect. Humans are assholes who can die in a hole — or, even better, die by my hand.”
Let’s address the first one for right now. He habitually pushes people away; this cannot be disputed. When he was in the Plegian army, most other soldiers learned much of what they knew about him through stories — Tharja recalls hearing of him as “A man guarded by fierce crows, so that very few have seen the true extent of his powers.” (Crows, by the by, seem to have a particularly strong fondness for Henry, to the extent that entire flocks literally follow him around everywhere. He doesn’t mind.) In addition to this, though, Henry seems to imply through several supports that he may have exaggerated some of his personality traits for the express purpose of keeping other humans away. (Case in point: fear. Henry doesn't often get truly scared, but when he does, he hides his fear behind a smile so everyone else thinks he's still taking it like a champ.) Olivia wonders often whether Henry is wearing a “true smile” or not, but the answer is somewhere in the middle. He always had a sunny disposition and fondness for the macabre, but through years upon years of playing up those traits, Henry himself is sometimes unsure whether he’s smiling because he means it or because his face is frozen that way.
Henry also has a powerful desire to be viewed as worthy in the eyes of people he actually cares about. To these people, his enthusiasm and devotion is completely sincere, in contrast to the questionable loyalty he displays around everyone else. Henry takes initiative and starts things on his own, but if a superior he respects tells him to stop, he will drop it immediately with minor complaining… and after that, he’ll actually work to fix the problem, even if he doesn’t understand why it’s necessary. However, he will not obey completely blindly: “Heck, I always obey orders! Well, except for stupid ones like "don't fight the enemy". If someone tried to tell me that, I'd cut 'em in half and feed them to the crows!” Henry prefers not to concern himself with topics such as ‘politics’ or ‘morality’; they all seem like unnecessary complications to someone like him, whose sole objective in life is to have as much fun killing as many people as possible.
At his core, Henry is searching constantly for any sensation that feels good. As he discovered from the Wolfmom incident, people dying in horrible ways brings him joy, and murder makes him feel powerful and important. He spent most of his childhood in military school, where the primary objective was to promote self-control and adherence to order; Henry never wanted anything to do with that. He was always causing ‘trouble’, which usually involved wanton slaughter of classmates or faculty, and the school disciplinarians responded in kind. Many times. As punishment for his own crimes, Henry has been put through every kind of torture imaginable (and a few that aren’t) — yet, somehow, he’s still alive. Granted, his nerves have been ruined to the point where he cannot feel fur or fabric or a gaping wound in his chest, but at least he’s not dead!
Despite the app so far painting him as some kind of emotionless monster, Henry… kind of isn’t. He just adheres to conclusion #2 that I mentioned above — the one about animals being deserving of respect, and humans being deserving of a gory death. He will become very upset (and probably even cry a little) if someone close to him is hurt, and if he gets any children in the postgame, he is mentioned to be “a surprisingly good father” to all of them. His problem is that he absolutely does not want to extend that compassion to other human beings, because human beings are terrible creatures and he likes animals much more.
Now, Henry knows he has issues. He has a lot of issues. And sometimes, it’s terrifying. For the most part, he’s able to avoid the terror by pointedly not thinking about it — a very juvenile approach to almost any problem. Henry hopes to keep up this childish “LA LA LA I’M NOT LISTENING” strategy forever, even though he knows it’s impossible; he’s attached to that idea mostly because the alternative is growing up and facing his massive list of mental and emotional problems.
And above all else, he really, really doesn’t want to do that.
